Lateral-torsional buckling strength of corrugated web girders – Experimental study

چکیده
Current standards and specifications do not provide specific design methods to determine the lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) strength of girders with trapezoidally corrugated web. In international literature there are some previous investigations available focusing on LTB web girders. Based numerical calculations analytical solutions have been derived in past, however, is a lack experimental test results prove or improve these proposals. The authors performed an extensive research program including eleven large-scale specimens. All different flange sizes, beside, having same corrugation profile. specimens loaded by pure in-plane bending simply supported boundary conditions. tested limited warping rotational restraint at supports. No distortional type failure observed. During tests longitudinal strains captured characteristic cross-sections displacements vertical lateral directions measured as well rotation mid-span cross-section. compared existing proposals regarding differences evaluated. It observed that imperfections key role behavior. curve “b” from Eurocode 3 preliminary proposed for determination executed gives useful background further studies.

Design aspects of steel I-girders with corrugated steel webs
Corrugated web girders represent a new structural system emerged in the past two decades. The girder’s flanges provide the flexural strength of the girder with no contribution from the corrugated web which provides the girder’s shear capacity. Failure of the web occurs by steel yielding, web buckling or interactively between them. Lateral torsion and local flange buckling of corrugated web gird...
متن کاملLateral-torsional buckling resistance of cold-formed high strength steel rectangular hollow beams
Hollow sections have been widely used for steel structures. Applications of High Strength Steel (HSS) on cold-formed hollow sections lead to thinner and lighter structures. This paper presents numerical investigations on the lateral-torsional buckling resistance of the cold-formed high strength steel rectangular hollow beam. Results from finite element analysis using Abaqus software are compare...
متن کاملBuckling and failure characteristics of slender web I-column girders under interactive compression and shear
Geometric and material nonlinear behavior of slender webs in I-column girders having stocky flanges under the action of combined lateral and axial loads is investigated. Interaction curves corresponding to the application of compressive and shear loads at buckling and ultimate stages for both web plates and column sections are plotted. In addition, the effects of flange and web slenderness rati...
متن کاملLateral Torsional Buckling of Steel Thin-Walled Beams with Lateral Restraints
Metal thin-walled members have been widely used in building industry. Usually they are utilized as purlins, girts or ceiling beams. Due to slenderness of thin-walled cross-sections these structural members are prone to stability problems (e.g. flexural buckling, lateral torsional buckling). If buckling is not constructionally prevented their resistance is limited by buckling strength. In practi...
متن کاملThe effect of discrete lateral and torsional bracings stiffness on the elastic lateral-torsional buckling of mono-symmetric I beam, under the concentrated moment
When the out-of-plane stiffness of a beam is remarkably lower than the in-plane stiffness, the lateral-torsional buckling occurs. In this study, the behavior of mono-symmetric I-beams with discrete torsional and lateral bracings under the concentrated moment is investigated using the finite element analyses. Then, based on the numerical analyses, equation for the stiffness requirement is propos...
